Still Life

Questions to consider -

  • What is still life?
  • Why has the artist captured this particular collection of items?
  • What was the artist’s intention?
  • What does it mean?
  • What is your interpretation?
  • Do you like it?

After spending some time considering all of these questions and more, the children set about gathering their own collections of natural items in order to create a unique still life of their own design. However, they weren’t to collect just any item, their challenge was to have a clear intention for the message they wanted these items to convey.
The results are below and the children did an amazing job - I wonder if you can read the messages hidden in these contemporary art pieces?

Creating a still life using natural items - what is your intention?

We visited an outdoor gallery and enjoyed browsing the still life paintings on display. The gallery allowed us to look at a variety of still life images from Ancient Greek times to the present day. We were introduced to the works of several famous still life artists. We selected our top two paintings before sharing our opinions on why we liked them.

We selected everyday objects from the classroom before attempting to paint them. As a first attempt at painting still life, I think the children did brilliantly.

We learned about the famous French still life artist, Paul Cezanne. We spent some time studying his art before painting a cup in his style.
