Attacking and Defending
We have been using our skills of attacking and defending to position ourselves in order to throw a beanbag into a circle or to be able to best position ourselves in order to defend the circle.
We organised ourselves to be attackers or defenders.
Diwali Celebration Afternoon - Blue Group
This afternoon Year 1 and 2 have thoroughly enjoyed a fabulous Diwali afternoon. The children from each colour group came together to take part in lots of exciting activities to celebrate Diwali. Not only did the children love getting to spend time with children from year 1 and 2 in other classes to them, they also had a brilliant time learning how to make rangoli and mendi patterns, trying out Indian dancing and even sculpting their very own diva lamp!
Judo!
The children have started a 6 week block of Judo lessons with an external provider who is coming into school on a Friday afternoon. They loved their first session this week where they learnt some special Japanese words, how to safely restrain your partner and how to correctly wear a judo kit.
Subtraction Squash
We have loved developing our learning on subtraction by playing subtraction squash! We learnt about the total getting smaller when we subtract numbers and had lots of fun demonstrating this by squashing the playdough blobs and writing the correct number sentence.
We are Geographers!
Throughout this half term we have loved being geographers in the enquiry area! We have used atlases and maps to learn about the 4 countries that make up the UK and can now confidently label them on a blank map. Whilst learning about Guy Fawkes in History we also learnt about London and have linked this to our geography learning by finding London on maps and identifying significant landmarks!
The Gunpowder Plot
After learning all about The Gunpowder Plot in History we have been amazing explorers using our history skills to extend our learning further in provision. In our independent learning time we have chosen to write storyboards, build London Bridge and the Houses of Parliament, use iPads to access QR codes to watch educational videos and acted out the historical events using puppets!
Guy Fawkes Timelines
In History we became historians! We used our knowledge of The Gunpowder Plot to sequence the events to create a timeline. We learnt about the importance of timelines and what they are used for.
We are Musicians!
This half term we have linked our learning in history to music! We thought all about the history of fireworks whilst learning about Guy Fawkes, and then applied this to our learning in music by creating our own firework music compositions. We listened and appraised classical pieces of music to draw inspiration for our own pieces, before learning the names of lots of different instruments that we wanted to use. We assigned each instrument to a firework picture and then used these to create a piece of music. We thoroughly enjoyed performing this as a class!
Visitor from NISCU
Today the children had Diana from NISCU to talk to them about advent and what this means to Christians. The class loved opening the doors to the calendar and guessing who the mystery present was.
Santa Dash 2021
We had lots of fun this morning running our Santa Dash. The session started with a warm-up based on the 12 Days of Christmas. The weather did not put us off as we ran around the track laid out on the playground. Thank you to everyone who has sent in their sponsor money.
Deck the Halls!
We had a fabulous time making decorations to go up around school and decorating our class Christmas tree! We made huge paper chains, brilliant Santa's and dazzling baubles!
The Wrapping Paper Factory!
This week we had a brilliant time learning how to print our very own wrapping paper! We learnt how to carefully draw our design into the stryrofoam, roll the foam into the paint and print our Christmas designs onto the paper. We cannot wait to use our wrapping paper to wrap up our homemade gifts for our grown ups!
Learning to Sew!
This week we learnt how to sew for the first time! We have built on our threading skills from Reception to learn how to create a running stitch with a needle and thread. We then used our new skill to create our own Christmas tree decorations which we then embellished with different materials.
Our Christmas Food Bank Donation
This half term we have learnt all about inspirational people such as Marcus Rashford, Max Woosey, Harmonie-Rose and the Sign Along with Us choir. After researching these amazing people we decided to set ourselves a challenge to make a difference to our local community. We decided we wanted to help families and children who may not be able to afford a Christmas dinner this festive season, so we set to work raising some money. We decided to do 100 star jumps a day and ask our grown ups to sponsor us, and we were overwhelmed by the generous donations we received! After adding up the donations we had a look at a supermarket website and wrote a list for Mrs Denney to go shopping with. We were so excited at the huge box of food we were able to buy and cannot wait to donate it to the food bank in time for Christmas!
Year 1 Christmas Party!
We have had so much fun this morning at our Christmas party! We played lots of party games like pass the parcel, pin the nose on the snowman and musical statues and did lots of amazing dancing! We hope all our wonderful Year 1 families have a fabulous, magical Christmas holiday!
