Activity 1 - starter
Getting to know the characters.
Look back over the story from yesterday and today.
Who are the characters and what part do they play?
You will need:
- The characters sheet,
- Scissors,
- Glue.
Match the character description to the character.
Activity 2 - Main
Mulan takes the decision to go to war in her father’s place. In China at this time, women were not allowed in the army. Mulan decides to dress as a man so that she can fight in place of her father, who is too old and unwell to fight. If she is caught and her secret discovered, she will be sentenced to death.
You are going to imagine what it must have been like for Mulan. As Mulan, write a letter to your father explaining why you have chosen to go in his place.
Things to consider in your writing:
- What have you done so that you look like a man,
- How are you feeling?
- Worries – you do not know how to fight, what if you
get discovered?
- What dangers might you face?
- Why is it so important that you do this?

Try and include a range of sentence starters in your letter and don’t forget the comma!
