🦖 Dinosaur Fact Finders! 🦖
Our super Year 1s have been amazing dinosaur fact finders this week in their English work. They have created super dinosaur fact files and written their own dinosaur rhyming poems. We loved how resourceful they were, using the topic shelf books and artefacts to help them find new and interesting information!
🦕 Dinosaur Detectives! 🦕
We have had a very exciting afternoon dissecting dinosaur poo! We had a special delivery from the museum asking us to use our amazing knowledge of herbivores and carnivores to work out what type of dinosaurs this poo had come from. We had so much fun finding out what these dinosaurs had eaten and found twigs, grass, and even bones!
🧱 Materials Scavenger Hunt 🧱
As part of our new topic ‘Eggtastic’ we will be learning all about materials in our Science work! We kick started our topic by exploring different materials, what they look like and going on a scavenger hunt around the classroom finding objects made out of them. We also thought about what the objects in our homes are made out of and used the non-fiction books to find out even more interesting facts!
☀️ Spring has Sprung! ☀️
We have had a fabulous afternoon in the glorious sunshine taking our science learning outside! We searched around the grounds for objects made of different materials and discussed their properties. The children came up with some fantastic ideas as to why certain objects were made from specific materials.
🌍📚 World Book Day Fun! 📚🌍
We have had a magical day celebrating World Book Day! We all came to school dressed as our favourite characters and learnt all about World Book Day in our lovely Key Stage assembly. In our English work we wrote letters to our favourite characters telling them why we liked them and asking them interesting questions. 📝 In Maths we learnt how to measure in centimetres using rulers and had a great time measuring the lengths of different books in our reading area.📏 At snack time we tuned into World Book Day live and watched some performances from the cast of Matilda the Musical!🎶🎤 Before lunch time we enjoyed sharing our favourite stories with Year 2 and absolutely loved listening to their amazing reading skills!📖
💭 Is the person with the biggest feet the tallest? 💭
Today we practiced using the rulers to investigate whether the person with the biggest feet is also the tallest. Our super mathematicians did very careful measuring and used super teamwork to work out the answer!
🔍 Exploring the Properties of Materials 🔎
We have had a very exciting afternoon exploring the properties of different materials. We used feely boxes to describe objects to our friends using super vocabulary such as rigid, fragile and absorbent, we tried to guess what materials were hiding in the balloons, we investigated which objects were waterproof in the water trays and sorted objects into different materials. We loved sharing our findings with our friends! What super scientists you are 1D!
✏️ Daring Designers! ✏️
This half term we are completing the great Eggtatsic Challenge! Our mission is to design a protection device for an egg to prevent it from breaking in a ‘great big fall’ like in the tale of Humpty Dumpty. Today we used our super knowledge of material properties to create a prototype which we tested on a biscuit. We selected from materials such as fabric, kitchen roll and tinfoil. Afterwards we used our findings to create our final design which we will used to make our egg protection device. We used super reasoning in our designs to explain why we had chosen specific materials.
🐝 Human Beebots! 🐝
We have had a fabulous afternoon outside programming our partners using the Bee-Bot controls we learnt last week. Our partners had to follow our exact instructions to get to different points on the grid. It was a bit tricky going the wrong way when we knew where they wanted us to go!! We had lots of fun playing Simon Says to learn our left and right too! Afterwards we came inside to put our skills to the test on the beebots.
Marvellous Mathematicians!
This week in Maths we have been learning all about weight and mass. We used the balance scales objects which were heavier and lighter and then learnt how to measure an object using non-standard units. We found out that just because 2 sets of scales both look equal doesn’t mean that the object weighs the same amount of cubes! We had lots of fun finding out how many cubes objects around the classroom measure.
💧Exploring Capacity💧
We have had lots of fun today beginning our learning about capacity. We began to describe and record capacity using full, empty and half full. Our mathematical investigation today was to find out how many little, medium and big cups it took to fill our buckets with water!
🥚 Eggcellent Eggsperiment! 🥚
We have had the best time this afternoon making and testing our egg protection devices! We carefully cut up our materials, used super team work to wrap our precious eggs and then had great fun dropping them from a height just like Humpty Dumpty's fall! Out of 30 eggs we had 3 survive! We decided that next time we would use many more layers to protect our eggs and avoid materials like wood!
🌿 Taking our Maths Outdoors 🌿
We have had a super morning taking our Maths learning outdoors! We worked in our colour groups across Year 1 and enjoyed consolidating and applying all of our amazing learning on height, length and weight that we have worked so hard on this half term. Our activities included measuring the field with trundle wheels, weighing natural objects with cubes, measuring trees and using rulers to find the length of different natural materials.
🐣 Easter Egg Hunt! 🐣
The children had a fabulous time this morning completing an Easter egg hunt organised by the Year 6 team captains! They had to hunt for eggs hidden around the school grounds and collect them for their colour team. A huge well done to Blue group for finding the most eggs and a massive thank you to our wonderful year 6s - the children are very lucky to have you!
A Fabulous End to our Half Term!
We have had a brilliant time this half term rehearsing our Year 1 production ‘Hat’s Off’. The children have done an amazing job learning their lines, songs and getting into character. We had a super time this week performing it to our wonderful Year 1 families on stage!
