🎨 Exploring Paintbrushes and Colour Mixing 🎨

The children have been exploring various paintbrushes to paint flowers inspired by the piece, ‘White Vase with Flowers’ by Odilon Redon (1916). They even managed to put their newly found colour mixing skills to the test! 👨‍🎨👩‍🎨

Rock Scrambling at Warton Crag

The children are buzzing with excitement on their achievements during rock scrambling at Warton Crag! Each and every child was amazing and it was a pleasure to see the children work as a team, encourage each other to overcome challenges and see their faces beam as they met each goal on this fantastic, most adventurous journey! The year 3 team are super-proud of them 🤩

📊 GBM Project - Day 13 📊

So much has happened in our classroom over the last week and it’s with thanks to the children who have been coming in and singing to the seeds they planted. With much waited anticipation, we have around 75% germination rate with seedlings stretching out to wave and say a big hello to the children! It’s great to see that the children have managed to convert the germination rate findings into a tally chart and bar graph. What an awesome start to the week!

🌱 GBM Project - Day 6 🌱

The children bounced into the classroom after the weekend and are super-excited to see that some of their seeds have germinated! To keep track of growth and any observations, the children designed a data table in their plant journals to note the measurements of their seedlings as they bloom. For many, we are still playing the waiting game but we’re sure they will overcome their shyness very soon! 🌱

🌼 Spring has Sprung! 🌼

Not only have we been graced with daffodils outside on the school grounds, but they’ve also made their way into our classrooms to draw, sketch, paint using watercolours and collage.

🥕🥦 Here is our latest video on the Green Bronx Machine Project - enjoy! 🥬🍓

GBM Project - Day 1

We have been planting our seeds into rockwool. We thought it would be soil, but this is green and furry! We carefully placed 6-8 small seeds, or 1-2 big seeds into each pod and covered them over with a light substance, that looked like gold nuggets, called vermiculite. Finally, we labelled them and watered them and now we are waiting for them to grow!

Cricket Skills

We enjoyed our indoor session with cricket Steve.

The Green Bronx Project

We have started our first week of the Green Bronx Machine project and it has been an excellent beginning!

We started off by discussing the difference between vegetables, herbs and fruit. To start the pre-protect survey, the children were given 90 seconds (exactly!) to write down as many different types that they could think of!

We then discussed what we would like to grow and why. Can we grow fruit and vegetables inside our classroom with very little light? Less than half of the children thought we could. One of our last questions was...

Can we grow enough food in our classroom to feed our whole class regularly?

Pre-Project Survey

More Preparations for The Green Bronx Machine Project

In our next session, we discussed what we would like to grow in class. We  looked at different fruit, vegetables and herbs, smelling them and grouping them. Some we had seen, some we hadn't.

Working in pairs, we chose the seeds we would like to grow, ready for our next discussion ‘How on earth are we going to plant all these lovely fruit and vegetables in our classroom?!’

Battle of The Arrays!

Welcome Back!

It’s great to have the children back and they have certainly brightened up a cold, wet and blustery day! We have such a fun-filled term to look forward to and we can’t wait to get stuck in. Look out for news of a very exciting project we’re involved in too!

Internet Safety Day 2022

Are You Being SMART?

Year 3 have been looking at ways to stay SMART online. We’ve discussed the importance of keeping our personal information SAFE and not arranging to MEET anyone who approaches us online. We've also talked about how easy it is for a stranger to send a message with an attachment or when online, how pop-up links appear. We now know not to ACCEPT any friend requests or open attachments from anyone we don’t know as not only can it be dangerous or make us feel worried, but it could also contain a virus. We then talked about whether what we read is RELIABLE as not everything we read on online is true and if we are ever in doubt or feeling worried, it is absolutely imperative that we always TELL a trusted adult - parent, teacher or grandparent are some that the children came up with.

Look at the children’s wonderful display below, designed on the computer or by hand. Please discuss this with your child at home and remember to be SMART online.

Scarab Beetle Clay Sculptures!

Scarab Beetle Designs.

The children used their artistic skill to design their scarab beetles and then copied their designs onto their papyrus paper. I’m sure you’ll agree that they look amazing! 🤩

Mummification in Action

The children were able to understand the step-by-step mummification process much better today as we took it in turns to act out each step, including the procession. Despite some of the children covering their ears, they certainly had lots of fun along the way and learned so much! I’m sure they’ll be keen to share the gruesome steps first!

The Mummification Process

In English, we’ve looked at fact files and videos explaining the mummification process. Today, in pairs, we discussed the process again and sorted facts correctly into a table of subheadings, ready to write instructions on how to mummify a body.

🪙🪙 Show Me The Money! 💷💷

The children have explored making a specific amount using different combinations of coins. They’ve certainly stretched their learning muscles to add up the coins and use their reasoning skills to substitute coins to find the least and most coins that are needed to make a specific amount.

🌅 Stunning Sunset Scapes 🌅

The children have blown me away with their artistic skills of mixing and blending colours to create the most beautifully painted sunsets for their Egyptian landscapes. I’m sure you’ll agree that they bring a certain sense of calm in the classroom - the gentle classical music of Debussy certainly helped 😍 We can’t wait to see them come alive when we add black silhouettes linked to Egypt.

🏑 Hockey 🏑

The children have had another enjoyable and skilful training session this week with coach Mike. They’ve learnt how to pass the ball, using the push and silent pass, as well as stopping the ball by creating a barrier with their stick. These sessions are a definite hit with the children!

The Ancient Egyptians

This week, the children have taken on the role of an Egyptologist and have learnt about the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. They looked at key historical events they are familiar with and placed them on a timeline. They explored the way the timeline is split into BC and AD to show how historians recorded historical events before and after the birth of Jesus. The children were horrified (and excited!) at the thought of drawing on the tables but were relieved that it was all wipeable...phew!😅

🏑 Hockey 🏑

The children have enjoyed their first lesson of hockey today with their coach, Mike. They played warm-up games to become familiar with the side lines, 25-yard lines and D-line. They also learnt how to dribble the ball around markers and to specific lines on the pitch (playground).

Meet our very skilful hockey players...

The Great Outdoors

We embraced the cold and decided to venture outside to investigate the plants in our school environment. We found various leaves and discussed how they differed, found out if grass had roots, we put our measuring skills to the test to find a twig of a specific length and we measured the girth of the largest tree - 162cm… the equivalent of the height of Mrs Patel, wishful thinking!
