💻 Computing Detectives 💻
Today in our computing lesson we logged onto the laptops and learnt how to retrieve a saved document from our class folder. We worked together to remember the steps and were able to open a treasure map! The map gave us different locations around the school grounds to explore and we discovered lots of jumbled up letters. When we put the letters together we found out that they spelt the word Torrisholme! This is where our new topic journey begins - we can't wait to explore our local area.
👩🎨 Amazing Artists 👩🎨
Today we learnt all about what Morecambe was like in the past. We looked at old photographs of Morecambe and talked about what looked different, what had changed and what was the same. We then learnt all about the artist William Woodhouse who was from Heysham. He painted pictures of the local area back in the early 1900s! We looked carefully at his paintings and saw that he used lots of detail and took his time to make his paintings look very realistic. We then had a go at painting our own seascapes of Morecambe!
🌳 Happy Mount Park Trip 🌳
To find out more about our local area in Geography, we have had an amazing day at Happy Mount Park! On our walk there we talked about the different human and physical geographical features we could see e.g. a bus stop, houses, blossom trees etc. Once at Happy Mount Park we enjoyed using the park, creating a map of the park using the map keys we created in Computing this week and even had time for some sketching of trees before lunch. In the afternoon we all got to go on the train before walking back to school and enjoying a well earned ice lolly! What a fantastic day!
📖 Stop, Drop and Read! 📖
Today we introduced some new books into our reading area including a basket of phonics books to challenge ourselves independently! Before home time we stopped, dropped everything and read as a whole class. What super, enthusiastic readers 1D!
👑 Sketching the Queen 👑
On Friday we had a lovely afternoon practicing and refining our sketching skills to create portraits of the Queen ahead of our Jubilee Celebrations 🇬🇧 We loved using our new sketch books to practice elements we were finding a little tricky. After we had carefully drawn our pictures we used the watercolours to bring them to life!🎨
👩⚕️ A Visit from a Nurse 👩⚕️
This week we have begun a new topic learning all about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We were very excited to find out all about nursing in the past and thought about what we know about nursing today. At the end of the week we were lucky enough to have Joseph’s mum come in and answer all of our super questions about what it is like being a nurse in our local area. Thank you very much Gemma, we had a brilliant time!
🧠🫁🫀The Human Body🫀🫁🧠
Today in Science we have been learning all about the human body. We were very interested to find out all about the organs, muscles and bones, as well as our external body parts. To check our understanding we had lots of fun playing Simon Says and drawing around our friends to create life size diagrams of our body parts!
🔢 Marvellous Mathematicians! 🔢
We have been learning all about simple multiplication and division this half term. This week we have been word problem wizards by working out the answers using concrete resources with a partner. We even challenged ourselves to write division number sentences too!
Who Can Help Us?
In PSHE we have been learning all about relationships. We have explored different types of families, what makes a good friend and how we can show people we care. Today we thought about other types of relationships we have and how different people can help us in different ways. We really enjoyed playing a game where we had to find the correct person who could help us with our scenario!
🎾 Bouncing Balls! 🎾
This half term we have been practicing and refining our ball skills by learning how to throw and catch smaller balls such as tennis balls. We have identified key skills we need to use to be successful in our learning such as moving towards the ball, bending our knees and keeping our eyes on the ball. Over the last few weeks we have challenged ourselves to add bouncing to our repertoire of talents and had lots of fun today playing a simple game in groups!
✏️ Critical Friends ✏️
We have had a fabulous time having a go at being real life teachers this morning by being critics, friends and marking each other’s work! We had to spot capital letters, full stops, adjectives and conjunctions and tick them. Afterwards we write 2 stars and a wish for our friends and loved sharing our feedback with each other.
👨🏼🌾 The Enormous Turnip! 👨🏼🌾
To conclude our learning on repetitive patterned stories, this week we are diving into the tale of the Enormous Turnip. We have had lots of fun today sequencing the events and acting them out in groups. We loved creating our own masks and coming up with super ideas of what the characters would say to each other throughout the story. We finished the afternoon by watching each group perform and were in stitches at our amazing actors! Well done Year 1!
👂🏼👅👃🏻👀🖐🏼 Super Senses! 🖐🏼👀👃🏻👅👂🏼
Our super scientists had a fabulous time learning all about which body part is linked to which sense. They rotated around 5 stations using each sense to solve a mystery! We had super zoom images to study with our sight, crunchy crisp flavours to identify with our taste, weird whiffs to sniff with our smell, obscure objects to feel with our touch and musical instruments to listen to with our hearing. What a super science afternoon!
Gymstars
The children had a wonderful time with their coaches from Morecambe Football Club. They certainly worked hard. Well done, Gymstars!
☀️🌷🌿Summer!🌷🍃☀️
The children have had a fabulous time learning all about Summer by going on a summer walk around the school grounds. We spotted lots of signs of summer and talked about how the environment had changed throughout the year and the different seasons. Afterwards we came back to school and made a super seasons wheel to show of our scientific knowledge!
🇬🇧👑 Jubilee Crowns 👑🇬🇧
To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee we decided to practise and refine our printing skills to make our very own crowns to wear at the school jubilee picnic. We used our sketchbooks to carefully sketch designs before practising printing with bottle tops. We discussed how different this was to the printing we had done with styrofoam in Autumn 2 and noticed that the pressure and amount of paint made a big difference to our printing success. Finally we printed our designs onto crowns which looked fantastic!
