Earth Day 2021
On Thursday we celebrated Earth Day, which this year had the theme 'Restore Our Earth'.
Each year group had their own take on this, which was sometimes linked to the place they are studying as part of our current, 'Torrisholme on Tour' topic.
In Reception, the children learnt about recycling, including learning about the different materials and role playing sorting items for recycling. Each child has also upcycled a used tin can into a pencil pot!
In Year 1, the children donned gloves and armed with litter pickers, set about cleaning up the school grounds. They did a fantastic job!!
In Year 2, learnt about deforestation, specifically in Madagascar, their current place of study. They made some fantastic posters to show people what they can do to prevent further damage to our Earth.
In Year 3, to link with their work on rivers, the children learned about the impact of litter upon the oceans and rivers.
In Year 4, the children focused on things in the home that reduce environmental impact. They then learnt about homes in Iceland and ways in which they are designed to be energy efficient. They then considered this in designing a Morecambe 'eco-house.'
In Year 5, the children have worked hard to transform the quad garden area into a 'bee friendly' garden, after learning about the importance of bees. They also made bird feeders to hang in the trees.
In Year 6, the children also considered the impact of deforestation and completed some great work inspired by the story 'The Great Kapok Tree' which is about rainforest conservation. This was linked to their work on South America.
School Turns Red for Comic Relief
Thank you to all our families for their fabulous efforts for Comic Relief! School was flooded with superheroes and a sea of red, with an amazing £510 raised for this year's appeal.
Well done Team Torrisholme!
Chef Amira Raises £££ for St. John's Hospice
During the recent lockdown, we were delighted to hear from lots of our children who had got involved in the 'Random Acts of Kindness' initiative, doing lots of things to be kind and helpful to others.
Amira in Year 2 really took this to the next level as she came up with the idea to bake some cakes for friends and family to raise some money for St. John's Hospice.
Amira set about baking and family and friends put in their orders, which were delivered to the doorstep by Amira and her family.
Four weeks and lots of hours in the kitchen later, Amira had delivered cakes far and wide, including to her school friends and bringing the most amazing array of treats into school for the staff.
We are so proud of Amira's hard work and caring attitude and we are thrilled to announce that she has been able to present the hospice with an amazing £1400!!
The hospice sent a t-shirt to Amira, calling her at St. John's Hospice Hero and we are sure you will agree! What an amazing achievement - congratulations, Amira!

Captain Sir Tom Moore Challenges
Following the death of national hero Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised over £30 million by walking 100 laps of his garden in the approach to his 100th birthday, we asked you to consider your own challenge with the theme of 100.
We were thrilled to hear from lots of you! we had everything from star jumps on the promenade to picking up 100 pieces of litter to help the environment!
Here are some photos!
Family Full Moon Festival
As our whole school space topic draws to a close, we are sharing a selection of work and activities from here in school and sent in by our families.
We are amazed as ever by the enthusiasm and creativity of our families, especially at such a tricky time. Parents and carers who are managing any level of home schooling at all - we salute you! Well done!
Our staff have loved catching up with the children via Zoom and we hope they all enjoyed seeing their friends.
