Inclusive Fun Day at Lancaster Road
Yesterday, some of our children visited Lancaster Road Primary School, for a day of summer themed fun, meeting new friends from a number of local schools. We made sea creatures and boats, planted seeds, took part in a treasure hunt and decorated biscuits.
Year 1 Pirate Day Out!
Shiver me timbers! Look at this scary looking bunch of fearsome sea dogs setting off on their trip to Brockholes today! Let's hope the sun comes out and nobody has to walk the plank!
Our New Mission Statement
Thank you to all the families that returned their postcards with suggestions for our new mission statement. In assembly today, we were visited by Bishop Geoff, who drew out a winner for the family ticket to the cinema!
After much deliberation, our new mission statement, which will be followed by a series of aims (which are currently under construction!), our new mission statement is:
"Torrisholme Primary School is a place where we celebrate and value the uniqueness of everyone. Our exciting and innovative curriculum provides children with challenging and memorable learning experiences within a safe and caring environment. Strong collaborative links within our school community create an effective partnership to support the development of every child."
We would now like to work on developing a 'slogan' or 'strap line', which is short and snappy and could be used on headed paper and such like. We would like it to incorporate what a happy bunch we are here at Torrisholme, as that was something that came through overwhelmingly on your replies!
Please send your suggestions in by Friday 25th June.
Visit from the Bishop
Today we were excited to welcome two visitors into assembly: Bishop Geoff and Martin came into school to present the shield won by all the children and families who took part in 'Run 4 the World' on the promenade back in May. The shield was awarded to us as the primary school with the most participants.
Awards were also handed out to the winner of the girls' 5km race, the only primary school boy ever to run the 10km race and the winner of the women's 10km race - Miss Stalker!!
We also found out a little bit about some of the charities which benefit from the funds raised by Run 4 the World and could see that our efforts were in aid of a very good cause.
Another big thank you to everyone who joined us to take part and thank you to Bishop Geoff and Martin for joining us today.
Coding Competition Winners!!
After attending a 'Coding Club' run by volunteer students from Lancaster University, some of our Y5 children attended a competition today.
The competition involved the children working in pairs to design, create and program their very own computer game. We were thrilled to see how well the children worked collaboratively and how much perseverance they showed when working on the coding for the tricky games.
60 children attended in total, from 5 different schools and when the winners were announced, we were delighted when the first prize was awarded to two of our pupils! As well as taking home individual prizes, they won a fantastic technical lego set for the school! We will look forward to trying this out at Coding Club next week!
Hopefully, we'll get our games loaded onto the website soon for you to try out!
Waterfest!
Today, Y3 and Y6 held a 'Waterfest' on the field, which culminated in an enormous water fight!!! Thanks you to all the parents who attended! We hope you have now dried out!!
Torrisholme Reading Festival
Move over Glastonbury! On Friday, we held our very first 'Reading Festival'and with beautiful sunshine there were no signs of mud or wellies!
The children spent the day working in mixed age groups, allowing children from Reception up to Year 6 to work together on collaborative activities, all of which were inspired by stories. These included Julia Donaldson's 'The Scarecrow's Wedding', Jill Murphy's 'The Worst Witch', J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, a range of stories by Roald Dahl, stories on a pirate theme and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
To make the day into a real festival, the children wore wristbands and we had a whole school picnic at lunchtime.
Check out the photos of our fabulous festival day.
