Key Stage 2 Roman Choice Day
Today, the children in Key Stage 2 finished off a great week learning about The Romans by choosing an area that they would like to learn about in more depth. Choices included Roman art, entertainment, housing/buildings and the army. Children worked in mixed age groups to take an lots of exciting tasks and challenges.
They also enjoyed a picnic lunch in their classrooms, after the Key Stage 1 banquet took over the hall!
Welcome to Torrisholme Castle
The staff were working hard after school this afternoon on a special challenge - to transform the school hall into our very own castle ready for tomorrow's theme day and medieval banquet! We look forward to welcoming the children from Skerton St Luke's for a fantastic day!
Year 6 Visit Vindolanda
Year 6 had a great adventure visiting the site of the Vindolanda Roman fort with the children from Skerton St Luke's. They visited the excavated fort and settlement, where they met an archaeologist, a museum about the Roman army, which included a holographic Roman teacher and a 3D film about the settlement.
Year 2 Visit to Clitheroe Castle
Year 2 had a fabulous, action-packed day visiting Clitheroe Castle. They made armour for an egg and threw it over the curtain wall to see how successful it was at protecting the egg! They also made a motte and bailey castle out of sand and sticks, about dragons and how to protect themselves from dragons using a sword and shield!
3W's Amazing Roman Shield Homework Challenge!
Before half term, in preparation for the re-enactment of a Roman battle at Skerton St Luke's, Mrs Wood and Mrs Hunter set their class the challenge of making their very own replica Roman shield. Mrs Wood was thrilled this morning, to see how hard all the children (and their parents!) have been working over the holidays to fulfill the challenge.
I think the Skerton St Luke's Army will surrender as soon as they see us get off the coach with these!! Well done 3W!
Year 6 Collaboration
To kick off our History Week, our Year 6 children welcomed the Year 6 pupils from Skerton St Luke's, taking part in a large scale timeline activity to establish where the Romans fit in chronologically.
The children worked really well together and very much enjoyed meeting one another. They look forward to a shared adventure tomorrow, visiting Hadrian's Wall and the Vindolanda excavation!
It's History Week!
This week, we are holding an exciting, history-themed week, which we have planned in collaboration with St Luke's Primary School, Skerton.
In Reception and Key Stage 1, the children are learning through the topic of castles. Each class will be visiting a castle and the week will culminate in a theme day, including a huge, medieval-style banquet, during which our school hall will be transformed into our very own castle! The children of St Luke's will visit for the day and we look forward to fabulous costumes, food, dancing and entertainment!
In Key Stage 2, the children are learning about The Romans, with each class collaborating with the children from their age group at St Luke's to share a Roman experience. These will include trips to museums in Lancaster, Ribchester, Hadrian's Wall and a visit from a Roman expert.
Key Stage 2's week will culminate with the opportunity to learn in more depth about an area of their choice.
Keep an eye on the class pages to find out more about our exciting activities!
